Pro Bowl

Pro Bowl : It’s Pro Bowl week, and coincidentally, I just heard the best story about the Pro Bowl ever told. It involves Brandon Spikes, a former Patriots linebacker from 2010-2013, and a conversation he had with Tom Brady in 2012, after Spikes found out he didn’t make the Pro Bowl roster.

I was interviewing Spikes about his career this week, and I asked him for his fondest memory from Foxborough. This was his answer:

“I had one of my best years my third season,” Spikes said. “I’d been playing off the charts. And I didn’t get picked to go to the Pro Bowl. I was moping around, actually in tears, and a few guys were trying to lift me up, like, ‘It’s gonna be alright man. We’ve got to worry about what’s in front of us.’ Then The Pharaoh himself walks up to me—I used to call Brady The Pharoah and he hated that—Brady walks up to me and says, ‘Hey B, you think I play this s— to go to Pro Bowls? Get it together. Get your head up. We’re trying to win rings. That’s what it is here.’ That’s where I knew what kind of environment I was in, how blessed I was.”

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will miss another Pro Bowl on Sunday as he prepares for his ninth Super Bowl appearance next weekend.

Brady has been selected to 14 Pro Bowl teams over the course of his career, including a current streak of 10 consecutive years, but the Patriots QB hasn’t actually suited up for the game since 2005.

In an conversation with Sports Illustrated’s Robert Klemko, former Patriots LB Brandon Spikes told an incredible Brady story of a year he was crushed after learning he wasn’t selected to the Pro Bowl team. While many of Spikes teammates tried to console him, the Patriots QB bluntly told Spikes to get over it.

Spikes played for the Patriots for four seasons, but never won a ring in New England thanks to Eli Manning and the Giants. Spikes also never made a Pro Bowl team, but at least he has two BCS national championship rings from his Florida days.

The Patriots quarterback usually has a good excuse to skip the all-star exhibition held on the Sunday between the conference championships and the Super Bowl. He’s had to prepare for eight Super Bowls, not including the upcoming Lombardi Trophy decider against the Los Angeles Rams.

It’s no secret that Brady would rather be watching game-week film of an opponent than watching the Honolulu waves roll in. His former teammate, Brandon Spikes, gave more insight this week into Brady’s approach to the two final games on the NFL calendar.
